Research activities on conventional and alternative vehicles at the Energy and Propulsion Laboratory of the University of Salerno

In the seminar, after a short presentation of the University of Salerno and of the research group, an overview of the main research activities performed at the University of Salerno in the field of automotive vehicles will be presented. The seminar will focus primarily on modeling techniques oriented to control and optimization of fuel economy and emissions in conventional engines, to studies on energy management of hybrid vehicles and on hybrid-solar vehicles, and on a project on the solar hybridization of conventional cars.


Born in Naples, 1952. Degree cum laude in Mechanical Engineering, University of Naples (1975). Worked at FIAT Auto, Turin (1977), Istituto Motori CNR, Naples (1978-81), University of Naples (1981-92), University of Salerno (1992-), where is Full professor at the Dept. of Industrial Engineering and Chair of Teaching Council of Mechanical Engineering and Management Engineering.

Chair of IFAC TC “Automotive Control” (2008-2014). Associate Editor of Control Engineering Practice. Member of Advisory Board of International Journal of Energy Optimization and Engineering (IJEOE). Member of Editorial Board of International Journal of Powertrains. Member of Advisory Board of CERC, Chalmers University (2011-2012). Founder and CEO of eProInn, spin-off of the University of Salerno.

Author of over 150 papers on modeling and control of automotive engines, hybrid and solar vehicles, energy conversion systems and renewable energy. Author of a patent on solar hybridization of conventional vehicles. Responsible for several projects with EU, public bodies and industry. Details at
