Title: A Renaissance of Phase
Abstract:
Thephase or argument of a complex number is an important yet elementaryconcept, essential to almost all scientific disciplines. In signaland system theory the concept of phase used to play an extremelyimportant role. However, in the era of MIMO systems, the role ofphase had been diminishing until very recently when we revived thestudy of phase and its applications in complex systems. In this talk,we will examine the progress achieved in this study, starting fromthe phase of a matrix to the phase of a nonlinear network.
Biography:
Prof.Li Qiu received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from theUniversity of Toronto in 1990. After briefly working in the CanadianSpace Agency, the Fields Institute for Research in MathematicalSciences (Waterloo), and the Institute of Mathematics and itsApplications (Minneapolis), he joined Hong Kong University of Scienceand Technology in 1993 and now is a professor in Electronic andComputer Engineering. In September 2024, he will join the ChineseUniversity of Hong Kong at Shenzhen as a Presidential ChairProfessor.
Prof.Qiu’s research interests include system, control, optimizationtheory, and mathematics for information technology, as well as theirapplications in manufacturing industry and energy systems. He is alsointerested in control education and co-authored an undergraduatetextbook “Introduction to Feedback Control” which was publishedby Prentice-Hall in 2009. He served as an associate editor of theIEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and Automatica. He wasthe general chair of the 7th Asian Control Conference, which was heldin Hong Kong in 2009. He was a Distinguished Lecturer from 2007 to2010 and was a member of the Board of Governors in 2012 and 2017 ofthe IEEE Control Systems Society. He was the founding chairperson ofthe Hong Kong Automatic Control Association and a vice president ofAsian Control Association. He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of IFAC,and an inaugural Fellow of Asian Control Association (ACA).
